Tigers show their bite!

Wetherby U10s were away again for their second match of the season in the York league. They faced Carr Vikings, another unknown team, on a bigger than normal pitch but in warm sunny conditions. The squad of 8 meant there would be a lot of extra pitch time for the players, compared to Carr Vikings who had 5 rolling subs. It turned out to be another nail biting classic.

Just like last week Wetherby went down 1-0 to an early goal, but their heads stayed up and they equalised quickly after a well struck shot from Finn could only be partially parried by the goalkeeper. A minute later and they were 2-1 up after a fantastic passing move, Lucas laid in Noah, who dinked it first time past the onrushing keeper, just inside the right hand post. Carr Viking equalised again to make it 2-2, but with half time approaching, defender Ross stepped up to take a long range free kick. It dipped nicely through the melee in the box to nestle inside the bottom left corner.

The second half started ominously with Carr Viking again pressing and making it 3-3. Fatigue was beginning to set in for Wetherby and there was a feeling that Carr Viking were in the ascendency, but ultimate man of the match Finn made one of his trademark runs and again hit a powerful left foot shot which the keeper could not keep out - making it 4-3. Coach Mike Sheerin orchestrated the team well to maintain shape and concentration, Zach was industrious in midfield, chasing down the ball and holding up Carr Viking’s play and in goal Robert’s confidence grew as he made a number of fine saves to ensure Wetherby kept their lead. With 5 minutes to go, Lucas made a run down the right, beat two defenders and hit a low shot past the keeper on the near post to make it 5-3 and assure Wetherby of the points.

Overall it was another great performance from Wetherby, despite changes in personnel and a new league to grapple with, they have showed some great teamwork and are starting to play some impressive passing, attacking football. Lets hope the unbeaten run continues into their first home game on 9th October!

First match of the new season - What a performance!

The under 10 boys started their season in the York league this year, away at Elm Park. The team has seen a few changes since last year, having dropped from two teams to one, and two new players made their competitive debuts for the tigers. The game started ominously, with Elm Park scoring a well worked goal after 2 minutes to make it 1-0. But Wetherby were level within 10 minutes with Finn poking home from close range after a period of Wetherby pressure. The rest of the first half remained pretty even, only for Wetherby to unfortunately go 2-1 down just before the break after a rocket shot flew in from Elm Park’s star player.

Despite having the wind in the second half, Wetherby found themselves under sustained pressure from Elm Park. Debutant Robert’s superb shot saving skills in goal were keeping Wetherby in contention and then suddenly a bit of good fortune – star defender Ross made one of his booming trademark clearances from inside his own half, which skipped over the Elm Park keeper and into the net to make it 2-2. David Beckham and Charlie Adams eat your heart out. The match continued to grow tense, exciting and highly competitive with some over enthusiastic tackles resulting in some words of cautions for both sides from the referee. With 5 minutes to go, Wetherby were pressing, the Elm Park keeper rushed out and floundered and Lucas latched onto a stray ball, smashing it in off the post from the right hand side of the box. Wetherby were leading for the first time in the match and looked set to steal the win, but Elm Park struck back with a long range goal of their own – one of their midfielders hit a looping long ball which dropped just inside the cross bar to make it 3-3. The whistle blew shortly providing probably the fairest result for the encounter, with a goal count that reflected the high quality action.
